Gender Is About More than Genitals
A Five-Minute Segment About the Nuances of Gender—the ‘nuclear engine’ of the Human Person
“I’m no expert, but I know a lot more about gender than most of the big-name commentators…”
I’ve spent years observing and analyzing people and their behavior and have read a lot of theology and metaphysics related to gender. I’m no expert, but I know a lot more about gender than most of the big-name commentators who are saying wrong things about what gender is all the time.
“John Paul II taught that a person's body is the visible sign of the invisible reality of his soul”
Something we have to move away from is the idea that gender is about genetalia, or even about chromosomes. It involves those thing, but gender is about much more than that, because gender is something spiritual, expressed through the physical (body). I like to think of gender as ‘the nuclear power plant of the whole human person’ Everything that a person is is build on the cornerstone of their gender. It’s not just about man-ness or woman-ness (But it is that, too) it’s about personhood. The kind of person you are is driven by the spiritual reality of your gender. It informs your habits, your tastes, your behavior. It guides your specific preferences (Opera vs. Blues; Comedy vs. Thrillers; calm vs. energized). This all starts on the level of a person’s soul, not their body/brains/physiology. The physical realities of gender are merely how the spiritual realities of gender come to the surface.
The human body shares in the dignity of “the image of God.” -CCC #364
Gender is created by God, not by nature. Gender is a “piece” of who God is. As God is unchanging, so is gender. Gender is not fluid, but it is diverse. While there are typical gender behaviors, likes and dislikes, gender is far from cookie-cutter. Not every boy likes sports, and not every girl likes dresses. Gender expression can sometimes be outside of norms and expectations. That doesn’t mean gender is fluid, it means gender is more complex than people realize.
Even boys who don’t like sports enjoy other things that are typical to the male gender, and so on. In the video I use myself as an example. I don’t like sports, and I never have, except for baseball and boxing. And even when it comes to baseball and boxing, I’m not really a fanatic. I don’t like playing sports, I always hated gym class, and if i’m forced to play any sport, I don’t play it well. I also enjoy watching classic dance. I’d rather watch Flamenco dancing than a football game. Pretty un-manly, right? But I was also an infantry Marine, performed well during my tour, and also used to box (undefeated at 14 and 0!). My masculine gender expression is not cookie-cutter in some ways, but that doesn’t mean I’m less masculine.
Gender involves genitals because the body expresses the unseen reality of gender. Even if we change the body, we haven’ changed the reality of one’s gender. Even if we change the chemistry of the body with hormone treatment, we still will not have changed the person’s gender, because gender is a spiritual reality first and foremost.
Throughout this video segment (Extracted from “Battle Over Objective Truth”) I take you through a brief exploration of the nuances of gender, breaking down preconceived ideas and focusing on understanding gender expression beyond physical attributes.
I also discuss how gender differences manifest in how men and women think differently, emotional responses, and interests, emphasizing that men and women are equal in dignity but NOT identical in character. Using personal story and some cultural examples, I highlight the distinct yet complementary nature of masculine and feminine expressions, urging viewers to appreciate the full spectrum of gender expression.
